Propolis in Human and Bee Health

Glasgow June 16 - 17, 2016

June 2016 saw the inaugural Propolis in Human & Bee Health Conference at the Technology & Innovation Centre in Glasgow, UK. The event was co-organised by Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences and Apiceutical Research Centre. The conference marked a watershed moment, bringing together researchers from all over the world to specifically share their knowledge of propolis at a dedicated event.

None of us knew, when we took the decision to organise an international conference solely on research into propolis, what sort of response we would get. In the end over 40 scientists from almost every corner of the earth including United States, Brazil, Nigeria, Slovenia, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Russia, Portugal, Romania, Mexico, Turkey, Morocco, Poland, Finland, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana and the UK, came together to share their research into the astonishing range of chemical, biological and medicinal properties possessed by this unique product of the beehive.

Research papers explored the antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antifungal properties of propolis as well as the key functions of propolis in the beehive. The papers looked at its practical use treating dental problems, sleeping sickness and hospital acquired infections like MRSA (Methicillium Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

The conference attended by over 100 people was an overwhelming success with participants expressing their determination to arrange a second conference in 2018 possibly in Bulgaria.
